Welcome back to a whole new year of gaming news, rumors, first looks, and a volley of venereal diseases that I just don't want to get into right now. Since we were off for the last couple of weeks and we got some event coverage coming in the following days, we thought it kindly to recap some of the stuff you might have missed. This is Inside Gaming for January 6, 2010.

Netbooks and ultra-portable laptops are characterized by compromises. Especially for gamers. But no more.

Alienwares brand-new M11x delivers a no-compromise gaming experience in under four pounds. With nVidia discrete graphics and nearly four hours of battery life, its something you can take on the road for work, and game at night and on the plane. The backlight keyboard is to die for, the form factor is pure Alienware, and itll be less than $1,000 when it ships in February.

3D Games Reach the Summit

The first 3D Summit was held these week in Hollywood, and games took a step to the forefront. 3D movies are all the rage, but 3D games may be where the real action is. This is where NVIDIA 3D Vision technology comes on strong.

"We've got to tell people about it," said Phil Eisler, general manager of NVIDIA 's 3-D Vision, which makes graphics cards with 3-D processing power. "Hollywood has done a fantastic job of educating consumers and marketing to them about the wonderful experience in the theater. We need to tell consumers about the wonderful experience that games are in 3-D."

Developers don't have to do anything extra to make their games work in three dimensions. But many companies are going the extra step to make their titles look better in 3-D by adding such enhancements as out-of-screen effects and showing in-game movies and backgrounds in 3-D. The results can be stunning.

"The best-looking game at the summit was Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Played on PC across three monitors, with NVIDIA's 3D Vision hardware doing the processing and a pair of wired active-shutter glasses on my head, the game looked dynamite."

NVIDIA 3D Vision is a stereoscopic 3D hardware and software solution that works out of the box with over 400 PC games and converts them into fully immersive, stereoscopic 3D gaming experiences.

The big story of the year is going to be motion controls for Xbox 360

Microsoft has planned a set of high-powered events to debut "Project Natal" technology that lets players control Xbox 360 consoles using natural gestures such as the wave of a hand.

Natal boasts facial recognition capabilities that enable consoles to distinguish between players.

A shift to downloadable content will be among the trends on an E3 show floor renowned for action-packed trailers displayed on giant screens, demonstrations of coming titles, and models dressed as popular in-game characters.

Videogame publishers use downloadable content to deliver gaming software as well as virtual items such as outfits or weapons to consoles via the Internet.

Popular titles can be kept alive by selling new missions or sequels to original games bought on packaged disks at real-world stores.

Can GameStop’s Tablet Succeed?

The majority of the gaming community has its brains in knots trying to determine which company will emerge with the upper hand in the next generation of game consoles. The analysis isn’t set to get easier any time soon, because here comes a new challenger: The GameStop gaming tablet.

The tablet, according to GameStop president Tony Bartel, will be labeled a GameStop certified gaming platform, and starting next year, will sell alongside the next generation of hardware from Sony, Nintendo, Apple, and Microsoft.

But it’s also worth wondering how Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Apple (whose iOS devices will soon appear at GameStop) will react to what is essentially direct competition to their consoles. Not that it’s anything new, as GameStop’s used games trade has been infuriating game developers for years. However, even being sold a used game in lieu of a new one isn’t as drastic as GameStop luring a potential Wii U or iPad buyer in favor of its possibly cheaper tablet. A knowledgeable gamer knows what he or she wants, but it might not be hard to woo an indecisive buyer–or, more importantly, a parent who’s looking to buy a new system for their kid, and is told, “You can spend several hundred on this brand new PlayStation…or you can spend a mere couple of hundred for our system!”
