  • 2018-02-21: MilkyWay@home, Scheduled Server Maintenance 2/21

    Hi Everyone,

There will be a scheduled server outage today around 1pm. This should be a brief outage while we install some additional RAM in the server.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Jake

    ***

The server has been upgraded. Let me know if you see any more database errors or other hiccups here.

  • 2018-02-19: PrimeGrid, GFN-262144 Mega Prime!

On 15 February 2018, 02:15:40 UTC, PrimeGrid?s Generalized Fermat Prime Search found the Generalized Fermat mega prime:

    4246258^262144+1

The prime is 1,737,493 digits long and enters Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 7th for Generalized Fermat primes and 57th overall.

The discovery was made by Rob Gahan (Robish) of Ireland using an NVIDIA GeForce Titan X in an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5930K CPU at 3.50GHz with 32GB RAM, running Windows 10 Core Edition. This GPU took about 23 minutes to probable prime (PRP) test with GeneferOCL3. Rob is a member of the Storm team.

The prime was verified on 15 February 2018, 02:18:23 by Daniel Fru?y?ski ([B@P] Daniel) of Poland using an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 GPU in an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU at 3.40GHz with 16GB RAM, running Windows 10 Professional Edition. This GPU took about 20 minutes to probable prime (PRP) test with GeneferOCL3. Daniel is a member of the BOINC@Poland team.

The PRP was confirmed prime by an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz with 16GB RAM, running Microsoft Windows 10 Professional. This computer took about 4 hours 37 minutes to complete the primality test using LLR.

For more details, please see the official announcement.

  • 2018-02-18: GPUGRID, Experimental QC app for Windows 10

    Dears,

have a test QC app for Windows 10. QC relies on the PSI4 software which does not have a Windows version. Therefore, we'll rely on WSL (Windows Subsystem Linux - a nice lightweight Linux-like environment to run native apps inside Windows), provided by Microsoft in the recent version of Windows 10.

Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to prevent the distribution to non-W10 and non-WSL hosts.

Therefore, to run QC tasks, the first time only you will have to prepare the environment as follows...

Enable WSL. The procedure unfortunately varied over time, the most current being here Install the Ubuntu distribution via the App store (it is free of course). Launch the newly-installed Ubuntu command line via its icon.
It will request a password for a new user being created. Provide one. Now you have a working Ubuntu environment. As for the native ones, manual installation of the gcc package is required. So, in the Ubuntu bash prompt, execute the following commands (the prompt reads like "(your_chosen_user)@MACHINENAME:path")

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install gcc

(Of course, if you already have WSL installed, you will just need step 4.)

Technical details: In addition to the normal Boinc project and slot directories, the app will use space in the /tmp/gpugrid_miniconda directory inside your WSL installation (not directly accessible from Windows). Unlike the Linux app, the space is not automatically cleaned up when you uninstall BOINC or reset the project. To clear it, either uninstall Ubuntu, or remove it from the Ubuntu prompt.

  • 2018-02-14: Citizen Science Grid, [all] server issues

Looks like we're experiencing some issues server side where the file_deleter daemon isn't working right. I've cleaned up a little space and am running things to fix workunit/resuilt states in the database so the file deleter does it's job. Hoping to have things fixed by the morning but in the meantime things will be down while the cleanup is happening.

    Hi Everyone,

In order to use the "Use Reliable Host" feature built into the BOINC server software, we must change our workunit priority to 1 from 0. I am implementing this now and will check in over the weekend to make sure everything is running well.

If you have any questions or see any issues, please let me know.

We've reached the B limit for the CPU version of Genefer on n=15. As a result, at least temporarily, no more CPU tasks will be sent out on GFN-15. GPU tasks are unaffected and are still available. For more information and discussion, please see this forum thread.

  • 2018-01-31: MilkyWay@home, Nbody 1.68 release

    Hi All,

A new version, v1.68, of nbody has just been released. I have not yet released the mac multi-threaded version (OpenMP). I will release this at a later date.

In this release we have added a new way of constraining the width of the stream. Previously, we were using a measure of the velocity dispersion in each histogram bin. This led us to fit our parameters quite well. Unfortunately, we found that this may not be the best method in the long run. I have added a measure of the beta coordinate dispersion which, from initial findings, will be (hopefully) easier to fit our parameters with.

As always, please let me know if there are issues.

Thank you all for your continuing support,
    Sidd

  • 2018-01-31: Duchamp Sourcefinder, New Sofia Beta App (Opt-In)

    Hello everyone,

After the disaster that was last week, I took the advice of LumenDan and I've created a new app, sofiabeta. I'll be using this app in the future to trial new client versions and changes before using the main sofia app.

The sofiabeta app is opt in, so if you don't want to run it, you don't have to. You can opt into / out of running test applications here.

There's currently a set of test workunits waiting, which I've split into 6 runs to ease the ridiculous computation times.

    I hope this goes smoothly.

    Sam

Our annual Tour de Primes challenge begins in a little over one day from now, and runs for the entire month of February.

Unlike other challenges, you don't get a trophy just for participating -- you have to actually find primes to win something!

As with last year, we will be awarding special "jersey badges" to the winners in four different categories. This year, we're also offering special badges that are available to anyone who finds an eligible prime!

Come join us in February. More information about Tour de Primes can be found here.
