2024-02-13: BOINC, BOINC in schools

Registration is open for The Computation Moonshot, a competition for high schools which encourages students to learn about scientific computing.

2024-02-11: BOINC, YouTube video on BOINC server setup

A new YouTube video shows how to set up a BOINC server. Thanks to Alex Bryan for producing this.

2024-02-03: SRBase, New TF multiGPU apps deployed (issues fixed)

You need v28 to run it. There is only support for AMD and Nvidia cards.

To run more than 1 GPU you must have this cc_config:

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

2024-01-31: SRBase, news update on multiGPU setup

Our BOINC wrappers were already prepared on running the config but we missed a file change a long time ago. With the hint of the user CallMeFoxie and testing of user DeleteNull we are now prepared to run such a config on windows and linux except Intel ARC cards.

The big update is planned on Friday this week.

2024-01-30: BOINC, BOINC 7.24.3 released for Mac

This version fixes a problem that causes GPU apps to fail after a Mac OS upgrade to Sonoma. Download it here.

2024-01-26: Universe@Home, Universe@Home future

The time has come to inform you about what will happen next with the Universe@Home project.

As you know, Krzysztof Belczy?ski was the initiator and lead scientist of the project - he was the head of our small team. His sudden passing caused a bit of chaos, which we are gradually trying to manage. Unfortunately, the latest changes in the application code that were being implemented also disappeared with him. For this reason, as well as the necessity to introduce changes to the application code that had been planned for some time, we have decided to temporarily suspend the generation of new WUs.

As of today, we already know that Universe@Home will not end - it is being taken under the wing of Prof. Tomasz Bulik (https://nauka-polska.pl/#/profile/scientist?id=23855&lang=en&_k=ta6rhj). Nevertheless, we must ask for your patience; at this moment, the most important thing is to manage the organizational and formal matters and to work on the changes in the code. This should take us two to three months.

I will keep you updated.

2024-01-23: SRBase, phpmailer / email notifications issues fixed

There were a lot of notification issues since 14th while the project email account was blocked. A small change today fixed it including UOTD.

2024-01-22: Amicable Numbers, Beta test of part 3 of the 10^21 search

Part 2 of the 10^21 search will be over some time in March this year, so it's time to start getting ready for part 3! I found a few bugs in the current GPU applications that needed to be fixed (CPU applications are fine).

To make sure everything works as intended, I will launch a small beta-test of the part 3 search by the end of this week. The new work units will require ~2.5-2.7 GB RAM on CPU, and the same amount of RAM on GPU (for GPU applications), so the minimum requirement for GPUs will be 3 GB RAM.

The purpose of the test is to confirm that all OS/CPU/GPU combinations work properly and confirm that 3 GB GPUs can process the new work units.

2024-01-19: NumberFields@home, server maintenance

Just a heads up, the server was upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu this morning.

The database seems to be crashing every so often with an error about exceeding max connections. Bear with me as we look into this.

2024-01-16: Universe@Home, For memory of Krzysztof Belczy?ski

I met Krzysztof in the summer of 2014. It was then that Grzegorz Wiktorowicz found me and invited me to collaborate on a new scientific project. The reason they found me on the Internet was a problem with accessing the necessary computing power needed for the scientific research of these two scientists.
Soon after, the test server for the Universe@Home project was created - some of you may still remember it.

As soon as it turned out that the idea of using BOINC was a bullseye, Krzysztof offered me a more permanent collaboration, which I undertook with joy.
Few of us have the opportunity to work with scientists of this caliber.

We worked together for almost 10 years. About a month ago, we were discussing development possibilities, and Krzysztof was telling me about the publications being created based on our joint work (yes, there were supposed to be more than one!).

Unfortunately, today we will no longer be able to implement these plans...

As Krzysztof was a founder of the project, I don?t know yet what will happen next with our project. It's too early for any decisions, but whatever they may be - you will find out immediately. Krzysztof never forgot to mention the help our community provided him, and I am sure that we too will remember his trust in the power of the community...

2024-01-16: Universe@Home, Pchd Chriss Belczy?ski passed away...

With deep regret, we announce that on January 13, 2024, Prof. Dr. hab. Krzysztof Belczy?ski, an employee of the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and Universe@Home project author, passed away.

Professor Belczy?ski had been associated with our institute since 1995. It was then that he began his research on novae stars, followed by the synthesis of stellar populations and the processes of formation of compact objects - neutron stars and black holes. He obtained his doctorate in physical sciences with a specialization in astronomy in 2001. Between 2000 and 2009, he completed numerous scientific internships at foreign research centers. From 2009 to 2017, he was associated with the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw. In 2010, he obtained his postdoctoral degree, and in 2014 he was awarded the title of professor of physical sciences. Since 2017, he had been employed at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw as a professor.

Professor Belczy?ski was a theoretical astrophysicist, specializing in the study of compact objects, such as black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs. He is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, published in renowned international journals. He led numerous research projects, including the MAESTRO NCN grant and the MASTER FNP program, and supervised doctoral students. His research contributed significantly to the advancement of understanding the physics of compact objects and their evolution. His work is crucial for understanding the nature of gravitational wave sources, which are currently one of the most important topics of scientific research.

2024-01-12: GPUGRID, PYSCFbeta: Quantum chemistry calculations on GPU

Hello GPUGRID!

We are deploying a new app "PYSCFbeta: Quantum chemistry calculations on GPU". It is currently in testing/beta stage. It is only on Linux at the moment.

The app performs quantum chemistry calculations. At the moment we are using it specifically for Density Functional Theory calculations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Density_functional_theory

These types of calculations allow us to accurately compute specific properties of small molecules.

The current test work units have a runtime of the order 1hr (very much dependent on the GPU speed and size of molecule). Each work unit currently contains 1 molecule with ~10 configurations.

The app will not work on GPUs with compute capability less than 6.0. It should not be sending them to these cards but I think at the moment this functionality is not working properly.

The work-units require a lot of GPU memory. It works best if the work-unit is the only thing running on the GPU. If other programs are using significant GPU memory the work-unit might fail.

Looking forward to hearing feedback from you.

Steve

2024-01-12: DENIS@Home, Project status update // Actualizaci?n del estado del proyecto

Dear volunteers,
I am writing to update you on how the different experiments we had launched have been going and the next steps we will take.

On the one hand, we have finished (at least temporarily) the optimization of our model. As we had already told you, with the results that you have sent us, we managed to greatly improve how our model represented different physiological markers, but a problem that we thought we had solved had reappeared. We have tried different options but it reappeared in all of them. That forces us to stop and take steps back in the definition of the model, so, for the moment, we will not be launching new simulations in NHuVe.

On the other hand, as we had told you, we are trying to use our optimization algorithm in another existing model. The results seem to be very good, but we have to work in parallel on their validation.

In the coming weeks we will be working on requesting funding from the Government of Aragon for a new research project that will use DENIS as a computing platform, so you may have noticed that our activity has decreased a little. If this goes well (hopefully!) we will keep you informed, but keep in mind that these things are slow so the answer will take months to arrive.

Thank you all very much for staying there and for your support.

Sincerely,
Jesus.

2024-01-05: NFS@Home, And we're back!

The NFS@Home server was unexpectedly caught up in a campus network reorganization. That knocked us offline for a bit over a day. There may be brief outages over the next few days as we get everything settled again, but we are mostly back up with a new IP address. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Edit: The site came back up in the US on Friday afternoon PST, but because of a misconfigured firewall it wasn't available worldwide until Saturday afternoon. Again, we apologize for the issues.

2024-01-05: ODLK1, New K-Tuple competition

With the new year we organized a new K-Tuple competition:

https://primesmagicgames.altervista.org/wp/primes-k-tuple-2/

The competition will last 3 months and is for finding new result about some k-tuple open problems (there are 7 tasks).

Unless this Boinc project were all contribute to find solutions in latin squares field donating CPU power, the competition is for people that like to code programs and experiment with mathematics to find new solution by them-self.

For this project instead, the DB with all the solutions will be available as soon as November and December months will be finished to being processed for dividing the solution by their ranks.

Thanks

In 2024 we have updated the TOP5000 prime report guide / info mail. While SRBase is running PRST all the time all the credits are going to the PRST proof.

This means that a user must create a new PRST proof code and report the rest there. If you dont want to report a new CRUS code was created to report to the anonymous account.

2024-01-01: NumberFields@home, 2023 Year End Summary

2023 was basically a good year. The main achievements were:
1. Competed 100% of subfield 3.
2. Got subfield 7 to the point where it is essentially complete.
3. Completed several rows of the subfield 6 table.

Going forward we will continue chipping away at subfield 6. Meanwhile, the last remnants of subfield 7 have been farmed out to Gerasim.

Thanks everyone for your contributions and have a wonderful New Year!

2023-12-29: SRBase, CRUS goals for 2024 released

2024 project goals

Recommended bases and efforts

2023-12-28: SRBase, SRBase - 9 years review

The project has passed the ninth year...

Compared with last years the following process was made:

2014-2015 - 1 base solved, 314 bases unstarted
2015-2016 - 5 bases solved, 297 bases unstarted
2016-2017 - 5 bases solved, 282 bases unstarted
2017-2018 - 1 base solved, 264 bases unstarted
2018-2019 - 6 bases solved, 218 bases unstarted
2019-2020 - 4 bases solved, 120 bases unstarted
2020-2021 - 3 bases solved, 101 bases unstarted
2021-2022 - 0 bases solved, 97 bases unstarted
2022-2023 - 3 bases solved, 69 bases unstarted
in total - 28 bases solved, 69 bases unstarted

With the last S79 base we have finished all our CRUS goals for 2023! This was pretty close.

Future plans:

We are still looking for testers with

1 (0x1) Unknown error number

https://srbase.my-firewall.org/sr5/download/PRST-11-test.zip

It is a recompiled unchanged srbase version with latest code changes and gwnum30.19 for testing the listed CPUs.

Run locally outside BOINC with

prst.exe -boinc -fermat "13288*96^204730-1"

Affected known CPUs or similar

GenuineIntel Intel(R) Celeron(R) J4125 CPU @ 2.00GHz [Family 6 Model 122 Stepping 8]
GenuineIntel Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU N3150 @ 1.60GHz [Family 6 Model 76 Stepping 3]
GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) Silver J5005 CPU @ 1.50GHz [Family 6 Model 122 Stepping 1]

Its necessary to get some infos back to evt. fix this because all of the latest code changes need to recreate the hole app with our mods.

There is one user who is able to compile a mac version but dont know when, still in contact...

The new CRUS goals for 2024 will be published in the next days, some of them we are preparing. A lot of them are 1k bases.

2023-12-23: YAFU, New YAFU version for Linux

There is now a new YAFU version 211.00 for Linux available.
Please test this version, especially on Linux systems where the previous version failed.

2023-11-29: MilkyWay@home, Commenting on Recent Issues with the server

Hello everyone,

I wanted to apologize for the recent server issues. The migration brought unforeseen challenges, particularly with DNS changes. As a newcomer to server management and BOINC projects, I've been on a steep learning curve to transition this project to a new server.

As mentioned in a previous post, and reiterated here, we have set up a temporary DNS entry for milkyway-new that now points to the server. The changes will take some time to become effective (I don't have a specific timeline, but I'm closely monitoring the process). This update will allow for downloading older work units linked to milkyway-new and uploading completed ones.

I'm immensely grateful to all the volunteers who have suggested fixes and assisted others with client-side issues. Your contributions have significantly accelerated problem-solving during this server migration. I can't thank you enough for your support.

To those who have voiced frustrations, I apologize for any shortcomings in my expertise. I recognize the value of the computing time you generously volunteer and understand your desire for acknowledgment of your contributions. I encourage you to continue sharing your concerns, as long as they are respectful. Destructive or derogatory comments don't contribute constructively to our project. We aim to foster a positive environment at MilkyWay@home for everyone passionate about science and distributed computing, free from unnecessary negativity.

One common concern has been the need for better communication. Despite my efforts to preemptively share updates, it appears more is needed. I would like to improve in this area. I'm considering regular updates (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and would appreciate your thoughts on this. Please share your ideas in the comments on how I could improve communication.

On a related note, we are excited to announce that we're currently developing a new version of the n-body code. This upgrade will allow for the fitting of additional parameters, such as orbit parameters, along with other minor improvements. We anticipate implementing these changes in the coming weeks.
Additionally, we are making plans to reintroduce support for Mac users. More details will be provided as soon as we have further information.

Once again, I apologize for the recent issues with MilkyWay@home and am very thankful for your patience.

Best regards,
Kevin
