The $2 Grand Prix pits the Falcon XR6 (fitted with the new Eco LPi engine) against the Commodore SV6 and a Toyota Corolla in a series of tests. These tests include a 100m dash, a fuel efficiency test (most laps of Calder Park on $2 of fuel), and a boot capacity test.

Pilot Flying J, a big coast-to-coast chain of truck stops, is installing natural-gas pumps at 150 of its 450 fueling stations over the next two years. Now a trucker can easily carry goods across the continent in a natgas-fueled vehicle.

United Parcel Service (UPS) is adding 48 trucks to its natural-gas-fueled fleet. The tractor-trailers travel between Las Vegas and Southern California, relying partly on UPS' own fueling stations.

These steps are just snapshots of a larger revolution that is gripping the energy industry and may profoundly impact consumers and business — for the better.

With a single surface well, producers can now drill straight down nearly two miles, then turn 90 degrees and drill two miles horizontally in many directions. It’s a modern marvel to match the Wright Brothers’ airplane and Thomas Edison’s light bulb.

The result has been a revolution in American energy. Our potential for domestic production of oil and gas are, for the foreseeable future, limitless.

North Dakota is on the frontier of this revolution and its people are experiencing the effects firsthand. The state has gone from an estimated 150 million barrels of recoverable oil in 1995 to more than 24 billion today. That’s a 16,000 percent increase.

Other states are sharing in the boom from shale oil and gas revolution. The Marcellus shale is beginning to return opportunity to western Pennsylvania. The same has happened with the Eagle Ford shale in Texas. Even eastern Ohio will be producing large volumes of oil soon from the Utica shale.

The dramatic increase in supply has led to a precipitous drop in price. In 2008, natural gas cost on average $7.97 per trillion cubic feet. Today, the price has dropped by almost 70 percent to about $2.60.

All along the millions of miles of highways that crisscross North America, wheels are in motion to remake the truck stop. Signs rise like palm trees from these oases for thirsty big rigs, shouting out $4-a-gallon diesel fuel. But this year will mark the first major deployment of service stations adapted to new energy realities; they'll offer 18-wheelers a place to pull in for a fill-up with natural gas.

Thanks largely to the hydraulic fracturing boom in the United States, it would be far cheaper today to run those heavy trucks on natural gas than diesel—and potentially cleaner, too. (See related: Natural Gas Nation: EIA Sees Future Shaped By Fracking.) Those rumbling rigs are the fastest-growing contributors to the nation's greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Widespread use of cleaner-burning natural gas is a step that could address climate change, although the environmental impact is complex and still under study. (See related quiz: What You Don't Know About Natural Gas.)

There's no question that the trucking industry would present an enormous new market for natural gas: Heavy-duty trucks account for more than one-tenth of all U.S. oil consumption.
