Low power Linux: wattOS R2

The wattOS developers have announced the release of update to their lightweight Linux distribution. WattOS, as its name suggests, is focused on low power usage and having a small footprint – allowing it to run on older, less powerful hardware.

The latest release of wattOS is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" and features several advanced power management tools to help users consume less energy for their "daily computing needs". According to the developers, the latest update has a much faster boot and install time and overall responsiveness is improved.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes and screenshots are provided. wattOS R2 is available to download as an ISO image file for x86 systems from the project's site. A PPC version for G4 and G5-based Mac systems is still in development.

Linux game-time refined with latest Wine

Wine, the project that lets Linux users run Windows apps within Linux, has released a major update that fixes a number of bugs and includes 64-bit support.

Wine 1.2 includes a new set of icons, a number of fixes for video rendering – improving Windows gaming – and better font anti-aliasing and handling of desktop link files.

Wine has always been a controversial app in the Linux community with purists claiming Wine is exactly what Linux doesn't need – a Windows crutch that just undermines claims that Linux can do anything Windows can do. Rather than relying on Wine, the argument goes, Linux users should concentrate on improving the Linux apps that cover the same territory.

The real appeal of Wine at this point is games. Of Wine's top-ten Platinum rated apps – applications that run without issue - seven are games. Throw in the top ten Gold apps – apps that run fine after some special configuration – and 17 of the top 20 are Wine apps are games.

Ten Reasons to Dump Windows and Use Linux

Now is a particularly good time to ditch Windows for good, for workstations as well as servers. For instance, now that Microsoft stopped supporting Windows Server 2003 on July 13, you'll need to find something different to use for your servers. Whether it's switching from Windows Server 2003 to 2008 or to Linux-based servers--or changing out tired and faulty Windows Vista desktops for the alien Windows 7 or something more user-friendly--Linux provides you with freedom and freedom of choice.

Linux continues its entry into the world's largest data centers, onto hundreds of thousands of individual desktops, and it represents a near 100 percent domination of the cloud services industry. Take the time to discover Linux and use it in your business. Here are ten reasons to give Linux at least a second look:

Ubuntu 10.10 beta preview: The cherry on top of a delightful cake

Canonical's Linux distribution Ubuntu shows that the firm is on the right track to make it the default choice of Linux for those thinking of making the switch from Windows.

Following on from one of the year's biggest operating system launches, Ubuntu 10.04, this latest 10.10 beta is somewhat more sedate, almost lacking in the visual novelty that its predecessor had. While 10.04 was a Long Term Support release (LTS), 10.10 will be a standard release that comes with 18 months of updates.

The latest 10.10 beta shows that Canonical is sticking to its plan of refining Ubuntu into a polished product that will rival not Microsoft's Windows 7 but Apple's Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I hear it all the time: “Linux can’t do this or Linux can’t do that”… or: “You have to jump through a million hoops to get something simple to work in Linux.” The litany of FUD and myth is as deep as Bill Gates’ pockets.

But it’s not the cornucopia of un-truths that concerns me, it’s the certainty of the people who spout them. So I figured I would take a moment to dispel these issues before anyone else can spread their vicious tone further.

Not all of these issues are known as deal-breakers. But as a whole, they could easily combine to keep anyone from jumping on the Linux bandwagon.

Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) has arrived, and we have the scoop on everything you need to know about Canonical's latest Linux, along with the usual review and benchmarks. Is this the change we've been waiting for, or is the Natty Narwhal a fail whale?

A couple of weeks ago, Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, launched Ubuntu 11.04 'Natty Narwhal', one of the most highly anticipated and controversial desktop Linux distributions ever introduced. What makes Natty a landmark release is the inclusion of the brand new Canonical-developed Unity user interface. Unity replaces the GNOME 2 shell that served as Ubuntu's default UI since the distribution's inception.
