  • 2018-08-17: MilkyWay@home, PhD Thesis

    Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to updated everyone on some of the current scientific work and results coming out of MilkyWay@home. These results can be found in my PhD thesis which I posted here.

The major result from this work is that we have mapped 7 stellar streams in the Milky Way halo. We believe two of these streams are likely to newly discovered streams.

These results would not have been possible without the contributions of the MilkyWay@home volunteers. Looking forward we hope to improve our mapping algorithms to find map new stellar streams and better fit those we have already found.

    Thank you.

    Jake

  • 2018-08-11: RakeSearch, Happy birthday to RakeSearch project!

    Dear crunchers!

Today, on August 11, we proudly celebrate the first birthday of RakeSearch project.

It is a joy for us to have managed such project for already a year. This is 1316 years of CPU time - which means that on average, 1316 cores perform computations.

By now, we have processed 27.5% of all possible workunits. This resulted in 90 found graphs of ODLSs.

On the peak load the project reached 60.6 Teraflops.

Many thanks for the participation and good wishes to all of you!

    With best wishes, RakeSearch team:
    hoarfrost and Natalia.

  • 2018-08-11: PrimeGrid, GFN-524288 Mega Prime!

On 4 August 2018, 09:10:53 UTC, PrimeGrid?s Generalized Fermat Prime Search found the Generalized Fermat mega prime:

    2312092^524288+1

The prime is 3,336,572 digits long and enters Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 2nd for Generalized Fermat primes and 24th overall.

The discovery was made by Rob Gahan (Robish) of Ireland using an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 in an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3930K CPU at 3.20GHz with 12GB RAM, running Windows 10 Professional Edition. This GPU took about 2 hours 36 minutes to probable prime (PRP) test with GeneferOCL5. Rob is a member of the Storm team.

The prime was verified on 4 August 2018, 23:28:14 UTC by Naoaki Tokuda (semanterion) of Japan using an NVIDIA Titan V in an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4960X CPU @ 3.60GHz with 64GB RAM, running Windows 7 Ultimate Edition. This GPU took about 24 minutes to probable prime (PRP) test with GeneferOCL5.

The PRP was confirmed prime by an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz with 16GB RAM, running Microsoft Windows 10 Professional. This computer took about 20 hours 55 minutes to complete the primality test using LLR.

For more details, please see the official announcement.

  • 2018-08-10: PrimeGrid, Solar Eclipse Challenge

August 11th, 2018 a partial solar eclipse will touch many countries in the Northern Hemisphere. We'll be running a Proth Prime Search (LLR) Challenge to celebrate.

The 3 day Challenge starts 10th August, 18:00 UTC and ends 13th August 2018, 18:00 UTC. Work units which are downloaded and completed during the challenge will count towards your challenge score. Many primes are expected to be found.

For more information, questions and friendly banter, please join us in this thread.

  • 2018-08-06: RakeSearch, July 2018 totals

    Dear participants!

A fascinating July is over! We watched a World Cup Final, Red Bull victory on home Spielberg track and "guest victories" of Vettel on Silverstone and Hamilton on Hockenheimring with the subsequent in Hungary. Many people could see a large-scale celestial mechanics show, when one night of 27th July Moon walks through Earth shadow near bright Mars, which approach at this night on minimal distance to our home world.

With your help RakeSearch project is also sufficiently speed-up during Formula BOINC race and received a many results with ODLS pairs! In second half of July 3384 results (in first - 1286, total by month - 4670) have been found by 200 participants and we congratulate:

  • 2018-08-04: RakeSearch, Formula BOINC RakeSearch GP race report and medal ceremony

The weekend from 27th to 29th of July was hot and fruitful! The most active teams, at these days, were racing on RakeSearch track for taking a leadership in leagues, points, and science, of course.

But the noise of engines was firstly heard before - when on Wednesday and Thursday teams began to open pit-late and deploy big harvesters on the project track and bunkering tasks harversted by them, into huge crunch tanks. The battle for the pole-position bettween XtremeSystems, [H]ard|OCP, SETI.USA and Team AnandTech was intense but hidden, and the usage of tasks harvests became a strategic secret.

From the start XtremeSystems went ahead, SETI.USA, [H]ard|OCP and Team AnandTech fought for 2-4 places, other teams formed an active, but backwarding peloton. Powerful buzzing monsters flying over project track, computed tasks, flew in pit-lane, pouring-out results, filled the fuel tanks by new tasks and raced again!
In the middle of the race, the set of computed results became so big, that it began to fall on the track and the race directorate deployed a validators safety car. After several minutes of restart, the race resumed and teams rushed to a finish gate! The fate of most places decided on finish line - Rechenkraft.net won 7th place against Russia Team, Crunching@EVGA overtook Czech National Team for 5th place. [H]ard|OCP had more bunkered tasks and made a great pursuit from 4 position passing by TeAm AnandTech and SETI.USA but XstremeSystems kept a large gap, managed a leadership to finish and won the race!

And it is time for the medal ceremony! Each team that won a medal can download it and and place on their website!

    1st place - XtremeSystems

    2nd place - [H]ard|OCP

    3rd place - SETI.USA

    4th place - TeAm AnandTech

    5th place - Crunching@EVGA

6th place - Czech National Team

    7th place - Rechenkraft.net

  • 2018-08-01: PrimeGrid, Yet Another SR5 Mega Prime!

On 29 July 2018, 11:28:58 UTC, PrimeGrid?s Sierpinski/Riesel Base 5 Problem project eliminated k=66916 by finding the mega prime:

    66916*5^2628609-1

The prime is 1,837,324 digits long and will enter Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 59th overall and is the largest known base 5 prime. 70 k's now remain in the Riesel Base 5 Problem.

The discovery was made by Honza Cholt (Honza) of the Czech Republic using an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz with 32 GB RAM running Microsoft Windows 10 Professional Edition. This computer took about 4 hours 35 minutes to complete the primality test using multithreaded LLR. Honza is a member of the Czech National Team.

The prime was verified on 29 July 2018, 15:45:07 UTC by James Krauss (Grebuloner) of the United States using an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz with 16 GB RAM running Microsoft Windows 10 Professional Edition. This computer took about 5 hours 38 minutes to complete the primality test using multithreaded LLR. James is a member of The Knights Who Say Ni! team.

  • 2018-08-01: Distr. Hardware Evolution, DHEP Badge Design Competition!

Badges will be awarded to those making exceptional contributions to our project.

Calling all talented designers to design the badges that will be handed out at DHE! The winner will be announced here, have a special contribution badge (of their own design!), and be acknowledged here: https://dhep.ga/ack.php as well as your work being visible and admired by everyone in the community!

We are looking for badges to be attractive, eye-catching, and would be great if they represent in some way the project and activity being rewarded. There will be badges for participating in alpha & beta periods, for credit levels, going above and beyond to help the project in special ways, for islands originating certain numbers of 'best of all island' solutions, and many more...

All designs welcome at M.Garvie@sussex.ac.uk until August 20th!

PS: For ideas from other projects' badges: https://signature.statseb.fr/index.py?cpid=13a87c3a303bcdca4ba0ed600daebb6b and https://signature.statseb.fr/index.py?cpid=9131861bc46b433f8a6716db0501dec6

  • 2018-07-29: Distr. Hardware Evolution, BOINC Platform Issue

There has been an issue with the BOINC Manager spawning the 32-bit client on 64-bit boxes.

Perhaps someone will be able to explain why there is wisdom behind this. And someone has. Apparently "Boinc will try both 32 and 64 bit versions on a 64 bit host unless the tag is set in cc_config.xml, it does this to find which is fastest."

The 32-bit client is A LOT slower and will explain why anyone might have been receiving a lower credit rate recently.

A quick check to see whether BOINC is running the correct app version is to look at your Task Manager. There should be no java.exe *32 processes:

(In this case BOINC is running one task with the 64-bit app and two with the 32-bit app)

You can also check the app version on any results you're crunching of course.

A quick check of the database revealed about a third of all Windows tasks being crunched are being done so with the 32-bit app which seems way too high in my mind.

We have found the solution to this but have temporarily deprecated the 32-bit app until we've implemented it.

Aborting your tasks and updating the project should resolve the issue. If not a full reset or remove/add.

PS: If you'd like to continue crunching with a 32-bit box in the time being you can also use the standalone client: https://dhep.ga/download.php

  • 2018-07-27: GPUGRID, Windows apps restored

    We restored the windows applications.

If you get errors such as "197 (0xc5) EXIT_TIME_LIMIT_EXCEEDED", please try these:

    - R?e?r?u?n? ?b?e?n?c?h?m?a?r?k?s?
    - Reset the project
    - Wait the problem out

If nothing works and you want to fix right away, there is a more complex workaround editing client_state.xml

The problem is somewhat explained here.

  • 2018-07-27: RakeSearch, Use a max_tasks_reported option

    Dear crunchers!

If your powerful machines store a large number of tasks and try to report about its completion to project server at once, they may faced timeouts or errors. Please use a max_tasks_reported option in cc_config.xml file for reducing of size of requests to project server and fast tasks reporting:

    <cc_config>
    ...
    <options>
    ...
    <max_tasks_reported>N</max_tasks_reported>
    ...
    </options>
    ...
    </cc_config>

For example, with value N = 32 maximum size of xml-requests to projects server significantly decrease and them process faster.

  • 2018-07-25: SETI@Home, Revised scale of significance of ET detection published.

A group of SETI astronomers led by Duncan Forgan, and including myself and BSRC director Andrew Siemion, has published a revised version of the Rio Scale. The Rio Scale is designed to predict the public impact a signal would have, like the Richter scale does for earthquakes. The prior version of the Rio scale, in addition to being rarely used, tended to overestimate the impact of low quality or low significance reports of detection.

Now all we have to do is convince other SETI astronomers and the press to use it.

There is a related article at GeekWire.

A calculator for Rio 2.0 scores in now available here.
