Learn how you can help by not doing very much at all. Stanley Litow, IBM's VP of Corporate Affairs & Corporate Citizenship and Robin Willner, VP for Global Initiatives share what World Community Grid means to them.

Throwing in all the "grains of sand" that i can get out of my box,
and i am sure we will move higher very soon.

steve:

When I'm not involved in PrimeGrid Challenges, SIMAP Scrambles or promising new projects [ATA wannabe], I'll be crunching [with my humble 7 core flower pot] a lot of WCG.

It's like what Willy said:

RAC [Recent Average Credit] is for the ladies, real men go by total points.

--loose translation from Willy's shoutbox entry last Sunday at the tailend of the PrimeGrid Challenge >> I couldn't get the older shouts for an exact quote

Imagine a newsletter describing the real science that the project was involved in. . .

. . . one that was interesting, informative and written so that normal people could understand. . .

WCG is setting the standard for all BOINC projects to follow.

With plenty of help from his company and some co-workers, Austin software engineer Viktors Berstis has turned the untapped capacity from hundreds of thousands of computers into a scientific research powerhouse that just might help solve some of the world's problems.

It helps that Berstis, 59, works for IBM Corp., which decided in 2004 that it would use some of its software expertise and networking know-how to harness the power of lots of ordinary computers that just sit around burning electricity. The project came together as the World Community Grid, which makes use of donated computer time to do research.

Now, after four years, the grid has more than 1 million registered computers worldwide, and it supports a half-dozen promising research efforts that could make the world a better place by, for example, finding treatments for diseases.

When multiplied hundreds of thousands of times, lots of computing work gets done. Berstis estimates that the grid presently does about 220 years' worth of computing every day. It allocates 20,000 computer years' worth of access to some researchers to give them a very large resource so they can attack big problems.

Berstis has had a distinguished career at IBM where he has earned more than 120 patents and has been honored as a Master Inventor.

"I get to talk to all these scientists, and that really is a lot of fun for me," he said. "And the second thing is, I am doing something that is really good for humanity."

More . . .

By visiting www.worldcommunitygrid.org you can download a program to help cure many diseases by allowing scientists to send your computer work units that will calculate medical data to help cure many diseases!

With the recent rash of BOINC projects that are up one day and down [or gone] the next, World Community Grid stands as an oasis of consistency and scientific relevance.

Exciting work is now under way on projects that hold tremendous potential to benefit humanity.

World Community Grid is a worthy project for your spare computer cycles and KwH's.

Submit your "I Dedicate" video & be part of World Community Grid's mashup

World Community Grid is calling on members around the world to submit personal video dedications by Nov 16, 2008...which will go into a mashup that we're pulling together!

World Community Grid has enabled my lab at Scripps to engage in critical computational research to design new anti-HIV drugs based on molecular structure.

This is work that we would not have attempted in the absence of this powerful public computing grid.

World Community Grid has allowed us to complete very complex research studies in six months that would have taken five years.

Unfortunately due to Team BOINCstats' [SOFA's] participation in the PrimeGrid Winter Solstice Cruncher, we have slide to tenth place in the WCG Christmas Race 2008:

Team Name Current Score

L'Alliance Francophone 26,362,445

Canada----------------- 25,365,874

Dutch Power Cows------ 20,862,156

HardOCP---------------- 11,708,429

Rechenkraft.net-------- 11,345,492

BOINC@Poland--------- 10,345,537

Fansub for Research---- 9,676,954

Christians---------------- 8,015,666

BOINCstats-------------- 7,990,299

We have a little over two days to improve on tenth place!

We came in a respectable ninth place with a progress chart that looks like a sine wave [due to our participation in the SIMAP Scramble and PG Winter Solstice Challenge]:
