I would recommend Rosetta as your first project:

*Interesting underlying science / Cutting edge research

*Established project / Plenty of WU [Work Units] to Crunch

*Runs on Mac and Linux too. Everyone can participate

    *Helpful message board community

*WUs tailored to your computer's capability / reasonable length

*Quick Credits: Don't have to wait days to start accumulating cobblestones

The real power of BOINC is the vast majority of users with a few computers to share with the projects. Those who could heat an office building with their computer farms are a tiny minority.

This webpage is an excellent introduction to BOINC and it's projects:

What if some of the world's estimated 650 million PCs (and 250 million households with broadband Internet) could be linked to assist scientists in solving critical real world problems?

This is exactly what humanitarian grid computing is about!

There are many Distributed Computing (D.C.) projects requesting CPU time contributions. This is an effort to categorize the various humanitarian D.C. projects, mostly in terms of technical requirements (and in some cases, links to comments on their scientific merit).

I've spent considerable time looking about how to do it best. My priorites when selecting projects: possible value for world/human kind, not-for-profit, results are made available to the public domain, efficient use of my computers' resources, secure and easy to maintain. I'll share my conclusions here, for others to benefit too. From my (user's / CPU time donor's) perspective, I will divide DC projects into two broad categories: BOINC and non-BOINC. I always prefer BOINC, where possible.

How-To: Join Distributed Computing projects that benefit humanity

Hi! I'm new here, but have been using BOINC for a little while now. I did a lot of SETI@home years ago, when I worked for a big computer company and had hundreds of "test" machines at my disposal. I recently tried ROSETTA but it seems they have abandoned the PPC platform, so I am now keeping my dual G5 PowerMac crunching along happily with yoyo@home.

Hello all

I hope this is the right place to say"hello"
I am new here and not realy know what to do
I came here becausem hhmmm dunno...I am not a sience person. all I am interested in is History-mythology- old cultures.
but since these subjects allways involve resaerch in astronomy, health, ect...I thought this might be an interesting place to learn more about things that normaly do not interest me( like physics-mathmatics - ect)
what actually brought me here is the Seti program, but I all ready added some more projects
I have some(maybe sil,ly questions) about it all...so can I ask here or is there another place for absolut newbies like me???

Welcome to BOINCstats.

. . . the BOINC forum would probably be better for newbie questions.
