* Can I crunch for this project without buying the disks, which at $400 and $550 seem rather expensive? If I can't afford that, how much data will I have to download?

The disks, and the enormous downloads, are the computation results, not the input. It's as if SETI was selling CDs with a database of all the signals they have detected. You don't need that to crunch.

I shall have to enquire around the internet whether anyone out there is prepared to pay hundreds of dollars for a few (preferably completed) climate models. The longer the models the more expensive they could be. At the moment CPDN gives them away completely free of charge to the climate research community for the good of humanity. It's not as if they are quick to crunch. And it's not as if we get loads of credits for all the trouble. How naive can a project be? These scientists at Oxford University need to learn some Rainbow Economics!

And when SETI finds a signal I hope they will charge thousands of dollars for copies of the disk.

DistrRTgen gives them away too, or you can buy a hard disk to save yourself the download. Although I would dispute the price: they're selling it for quite a bit more than a brand new empty hard disk, so it would seem they are getting some profit.

I joined boinc to work on SHA-1 collisions. (now this)

If it does turn out that there are SHA-1 collisions we will know that we need to use stronger encryption. If we do not work to find it there is a chance someone else will be able to find collisions.. or even crack it. If that were the case we would all be very insecure since one person or a small group could go around exploiting a vulnerability that we do not know about.

I see this project in the same way. Pointing out flaws is a good thing since it helps to build a more secure community.

Yes, the drives are a bit pricy, but it includes copying the data to the drives and shipping.. It consumes time. And a few big companies bought the disks with rainbow tables on. Usually they won't allow their security department to download 2 TB through their internet connection and 500US$ means nothing to them.

The money is only used to fund the project. (hosting etc)
