Hi:
Have a couple of old (dual core) computers that had been gathering dust so I've added them to my account. What would be the projects that would run most efficiently on a dual core without dedicated GPU?

Thanks,
RickMz

There are many opinions and discussions about this subject, ranging from "sure, every cpu helps to make progress" to "waste of power, a modern cpu does more work in less time using less energy". The SETI-forum has many threads.

It depends on your tastes in projects, you might have to shop around for a few and find out which will work best based on the deadlines and how long the machines are on. Also, some projects are more flexible with deadlines than others; on some projects, if you're past the deadline you get no credit, others will give you a few extra weeks or don't care at all.

You could try and look at WUprop, to see what other people with similar CPUs are crunching. It will also give you an idea of the average runtime on said CPU.

I'm in the "every CPU counts" boat, and don't feel bad if you can't justify having your hosts on 24/7.

NCI project: GoofyxGrid at home
Runs 2 NCI (Non-Compute-Intensive) tasks per PC - each task takes about 1 hour and "pays" 10 credits each.

Monkeys application will check some aspects for infinite monkey theorem:

monkeys_v1 - draws word for examine if thats word existing in Polish or English dictiora for now (I wonder about using more dictionaries).
monkeys_v2 - draws word until it not exactly like in WU.

About Enigma@Home

Enigma@Home is a wrapper between BOINC and Stefan Krah's M4 Project. 'The M4 Project is an effort to break 3 original Enigma messages with the help of distributed computing. The signals were intercepted in the North Atlantic in 1942 and are believed to be unbroken.' [read more] You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer.

For older machines, you won't see amazing strides in performance compared to newer gear. For example, PrimeGrid utilizes AVX extensions. If your chip doesn't have them or are AMD, then they really won't perform all that great "in comparison" to newer gear. This doesn't mean that they aren't worth running as that is all subjective. However, if you put them on WCG, they will perform clock for clock in many scenarios as WCG does not have optimized applications to take advantage of newer technologies. So, in that scenario only power efficiency can really be argued. Since you are willing to run them anyways, that isn't really an argument.

Bottom line, pick a project you like and just run them as long as you are willing. Definitely take advantage of Non-CPU intensive projects as well since they run alongside the CPU intensive work.

If you have the right detectors, even QCN and/or Radioactive

And don't forget that many older to mid level GPU's can easily be fed on older hardware. If you have the opportunity to add a card to each box later, that might be the best route.
