2018-05-14: On the current experiment

In the current experiment, we study the accuracy of the sound speed profile reconstruction in a shallow-water waveguide using a dispersion-based geoacoustic inversion scheme. This problem was transformed into a problem of black-box minimization of a certain mismatch function. A sound speed profile is considered a piecewise-linear function with fixed uniformly-spaced nodes. At these nodes, the values of sound speed are obtained in the course of inversion. The main novelty is that the depths of the sound speed profile nodes are also considered inversion parameters. Note, that in the previous experiment held in Autumn 2017 the depths were constant.

2018-04-20: New application version

Application version 0.18 was released:
- some memory leaks were fixed;
- some unnecessary data files were removed;
- an additional compatibility with Windows XP was added.

The report 'Vadim Bulavintsev, Pavel Petrov, Mikhail Posypkin, Oleg Zaikin. A GPU-enabled Black-box Optimization in Application to Dispersion-based Geoacoustic Inversion' was made at the conference OPTIMA'2017. In this report, we discuss a prototype of Acoustics@home's GPU application.

2017-10-06: Results of 'Ocean of fantasy' challenge

In the course of 'Ocean of fantasy' challenge, 26.4 % of scenario 906 workunits were calculated. Before the challenge, only 10 % of them were calculated in about two weeks. So, 36.4 % of the search space is recently processed. The project's performance has reached 9 teraflops. We want to thank all volunteers, who took part in the challenge!

2017-09-27: 'Ocean of fantasy' challenge

On September 28, 2017, the first challenge in Acoustics@home will be started. During this challenge, we will deal with the quite large scenario no. 906, which contains about 1 million workunits. Recently only 10 % of these workuntis were already calculated.

2017-09-12: Report at UACE'2017

The report 'Pavel Petrov, Oleg Zaikin. High-performance computing in the study on the accuracy of the bottom parameters reconstruction using two different fitness function' has been made at the conference UACE'2017. Some results of this research were obtained in Acoustics@home.

2017-08-29: Application version 0.15 and new experiment

Application version 0.15 was released. We slightly modified the uniform and the weighted main calculation functions. Also, 2 new such functions (uniform2 and weighted2) were added. A new experiment was launched. In this experiment, we need to solve sound speed profile estimation. In particuler, given distance between the source and the reciever of a signal (and also density and sound speed in the bottom), we need to find sound speed values for all 5 water layers.

Results of the first experiment will be discussed in a paper, which will be submitted to the
BOINC:FAST'2017 conference.

2017-04-19: New paper

A paper, in which it is described how we solve the inversion problems in underwater acoustics, was published. In this paper we consider the calculations performed on a computing cluster. Recently the similar calculations are performed in Acoustics@home.

2017-04-19: Credit compensation

All results, which were mistakenly marked as invalid, were marked as valid. The corresponding amount of credits were added to hosts, users and teams. I hope it will at least partially fix the problem.

2017-04-17: Validation bug was fixed

Bug with validation of WUs results from different OSs (windows and Linux) was fixed. Sorry for this. Now validation is working in a proper way.

2017-03-28: First experiment

The first experiment was launched. In this experiment, we will solve sound speed profile estimation in underwater acoustics. In particular, the data from Japan sea will be used. Here the sound speed of 1 water layer (close to the surface) is known, and we need to find the values of sound speed for other 4 water layers and also for the distance between the source and the reciever of a signal. Recently only application version for Linux was added. The version for Windows is coming soon.
