Does anyone know if all or any of the Boinc projects support the Vista operating system?
I have an upgrade coming to me and don't want to install and then have to revert if Boinc has problems. Thanks-JR

As far as I know, any project app that worked on XP will work on Vista - no difference. But the problem is BOINC itself, apparently there are issues with installation, due to Vista expecting stuff saved in a different place. For example you can't install to Program files as a normal user.

Also, somebody reported problems with the new desktop search. The indexing waits for CPU usage to go down before kicking in, with BOINC running that will never happen, and indexing won't ever start.

I would say, it's not working quite OK, but if you're brave enough, try it and report your problems! Will help developers fix them

Then which don't work under Vista? You say not all of them work, but you didn't have any problem?

I have windows vista ultimate 64 and 32 bit versions and after 4 hours on the phone with norton i finally got boinc manager to connect and was so happy to see it running but now i have noiced that twice i have had to reinstall the manager and reconnect to the 4 projects i wanted to help with.

Is there something i can do to make the manager install in the correct way and use auto start up? I read in another post somewhere that Bam doesnt work right yet with the newest version of the manager so i uninstalled both and installed the manager from 2006. It seems all have a problem with vista.

Is there anything i can download so that my computer can do this volunteer work in 64 bit mode? I have AMD TL-60 and would like to use it to the best of its ability.
I'm new on this computer so please nothing too tectnical.

Thanks for any help with this

I've run all the projects listed in my signature on Windows Vista Ultimate x86 for a few months now and have had no major problems with the applications themselves. However, I have had a problem in that if I restart my computer without first shutting down BOINC, often times my workunits end on errors. There seems to be no solution to this other than simply backing up my workunits fairly often. Though this isn't a major problem on most projects, it is kind of annoying for long projects like climateprediction where workunits tend to last months. Then, even if you make a mistake once a month and forget to close BOINC before shutting down, the workunit is ruined and you have to run from a backup (that may be several days old). As this seems to be a client-side problem, I'm hoping it's fixed relatively soon.

Also, for the question about 64-bit applications for windows, I'm pretty sure there aren 't any projects yet that have any (many of them say 64-bit applications wouldn't be useful at all). However, there is a 64-bit client you can run available here: Cruncher's 64-bit BOINC client

Shut down BOINC manually before restarting or shutting down your computer.

Also, Ageless on the BOINC board posted a registry fix that causes Vista to be slower to close, it's here.

It sets a value called "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="20000" ; that is, 20 seconds.

I don't use Vista, but people in the thread said it works, though they needed to increase the number for CPDN. Don't know if it only works for service installs, as the name suggests, but no one has complained that it doesn't work for normal intstalls.

To PovAddict, yes I usually do as I noted later in my post but even if I forget once, it can screw up a large workunit like CPDN and to Ken Vogt, thanks hopefully this solves the problem I set it to 60 seconds so hopefully that will be long enough for CPDN.

This is incorrect. ABC ß has a native 64-bit application which is up to 3 times faster than the 32-bit application (http://abcathome.com/old_news.php#22). Yet, there are other projects that send the 32-bit application to 64-bit clients.
